The sailing route

It's not just about the food or the sailing trip – it's about the unique overall experience that we at Sagafjord can offer our guests.

Through the sailing route, we pass several sights hidden around Roskilde Fjord. While sailing by, you can hear Stig Rossen talking a bit about the places over the loudspeakers. You can enjoy the view at the table during dinner, or on top of our deck, with the wind in your hair and a direct view of the Fjord.

Lunch sailing

The lunch cruise runs on Friday and Saturday and lasts about 2 hours. The route starts in Roskilde harbor and sails past the Kingdom of Elleore and down around Ringøen in Kattinge, before sailing back towards the harbor.

During the boat trip, you can hear more about the surrounding attractions, which Stig Rossen has described so well.

Evening sailing

The evening cruise sails on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and lasts about 3 hours. The route starts in Roskilde harbor and sails past the Kingdom of Elleore, the village of Gershøj, Selsø Castle, and down around Ringøen in Kattinge.

During the boat trip, you can hear more about the surrounding attractions, which Stig Rossen has described so well.

In Roskilde, there are several major attractions. At the harbor, you can find the Viking Ship Museum, while Roskilde Cathedral is located in the city center. Besides the larger attractions, there are many lesser-known but significant sights along Roskilde Fjord. On our boat trip, you will have the opportunity to get up close and learn about the locations along the way through the speaker.

12. Kongeriget Elleore

Mod vest ligger øen Elleore. Øen er et selvstændigt kongerige med egen valuta, egne frimærker og eget flag, ’Ellebrog’.

Kongeriget Elleore blev etableret den 27. august 1944, hvor en gruppe københavnske skolelærere købte øen af en lokal præst. I skyggen af besættelsen ønskede de et tyskerfrit område, hvor de selv kunne bestemme alting.

Ligesom på Island, hvor man har Altinget og i Norge har Stortinget, har man på Elleore et Ingenting, som man er meget stolt af. I anledning af kongerigets halvtredsårs jubilæum i 1994 rejste man en sten med ordene: ”Til minde om Ingenting”.

Elleore er på størrelse med Rådhuspladsen og har 250 indbyggere. Som det kan ses, er de fleste på ferie i øjeblikket…

Øen har sin egen tidszone, E.S.T., Ellisk Standard Tid. Inden ’ellerne’ går i land, sætter de uret 17 minutter tilbage: Det er nemlig den tid, det tager at ro fra havnen i Veddelev og ud til øen.

Elleore blev verdensberømt i 1907, da Nordisk Film Kompagni – med den hæderfulde filmmand Ole Olsen i spidsen – optog den første stumfilm herhjemme. Filmen hed Løvejagten og varede syv minutter.

For at fremkalde den rette savannestemning, blev der placeret nogle bunker gult sand og plantet ti kunstige palmer på den lille ø. I Hagenbecks Dyrepark i Hamborg købte Olsen to mølædte hanløver, der snart skulle aflives, og dyrene blev fragtet til Elleore på en pram.

Her ventede to skuespillere forklædt som storvildtsjægere. Uden for kameraets vinkel stod et par professionelle jægere klar til at skyde løverne, og optagelserne kunne begynde!

Rygtet om løverne og deres forestående endeligt, fik nogle dyreværnsfolk til at reagere, og Ole Olsen fik forbud mod at filme. Han overlod opgaven til sine folk, der jo ikke havde fået forbuddet, og forlod selv Elleore.

Løverne blev skudt for rullende kamera, og filmen kom i kassen, men Ole Olsen blev beskyldt for dyremishandling. Han fik frataget sin biografbevilling, og premieren måtte aflyses.

Men nogen havde smuglet en kopi af Løvejagten til Sverige, hvor filmen blev en stor succes og solgt til hele verden. Kort efter blev Olsen pure frifundet, og i 1908 kunne filmen endelig få dansk premiere.

Og løverne? De endte som grisefoder her på egnen.

12. Kingdom of Elleore

To the west is the island of Elleore. The island is an independent kingdom with its own currency, stamps and flag, ‘Ellebrog’.

The Kingdom of Elleore was established on August 27, 1944, when a group of Copenhagen school teachers bought the island from a local priest. In the shadow of the occupation, they wanted a German-free area where they could decide everything for themselves.

Just like in Iceland, where you have the Althingi and in Norway you have the Storting, Elleore has an Ingenting, of which they are very proud. On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the kingdom in 1994, a stone was erected with the words: ‘In memory of Nothing’.

Elleore is the size of the Town Hall Square and has 250 inhabitants. As you can see, most people are on vacation at the moment…

The island has its own time zone, E.S.T., Ellis Standard Time. Before the ‘oarsmen’ go ashore, they set the clock back 17 minutes: that’s the time it takes to row from the harbor in Veddelev to the island.

Elleore became world famous in 1907, when Nordisk Film Kompagni – headed by the honorable filmmaker Ole Olsen – shot the first silent film in Denmark. The movie was called The Lion Hunt and lasted seven minutes.

To create the right savannah atmosphere, some piles of yellow sand and ten artificial palm trees were placed on the small island. At the Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg, Olsen bought two male lions that were soon to be put down, and the animals were transported to Elleore on a barge.

Two actors disguised as big game hunters were waiting. Off camera, a couple of professional hunters stood ready to shoot the lions and the filming began!

The rumors about the lions and their impending doom prompted some animal rights activists to react, and Ole Olsen was banned from filming. He left the task to his people, who had not received the ban, and left Elleore himself.

The lions were shot on camera and the film was released, but Ole Olsen was accused of animal cruelty. His cinema license was revoked and the premiere had to be canceled.

But someone had smuggled a copy of The Lion Hunt to Sweden, where the movie became a huge success and was sold all over the world. Shortly afterwards, Olsen pure was acquitted, and in 1908 the film was finally released in Denmark.

And the lions? They ended up as pig feed in the area.
